Part 107 Testing

Pilots wishing to fly a drone under Part 107 must become Remote Pilot Certified by passing the FAA’s aeronautical knowledge test (commonly referred to as the “Part 107 test”). A remote pilot certificate demonstrates that you understand the regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for safely flying drones.

Eligibility

To become a certified Remote Pilot you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English

  • Be in a physical and mental condition to safely fly a drone

  • Pass the initial aeronautical knowledge exam

Cost

You have three things to consider when it comes to the cost of the Part 107 test:

  1. The cost of the test preparation materials which can range from $0 up to $349. We will leave our recommendation below to help you pick the best one.

  2. The cost of sitting for the exam at an FAA-approved testing center ($175 as of July 1, 2021)

  3. Any personal costs associated with traveling to your nearest testing center, missing work to take the test, etc.
